Working directly with me

This is a solo practice. You’ll see me for your physician visits and keep working with me as your care continues.

And as your health, needs, and life circumstances change, your care can change with you.

Giving Your Metabolic Health the Focus It Deserves

Your metabolic health doesn’t exist in isolation. I take the time to learn your story, your health history, your concerns, what you’ve already tried, and what is happening in your life right now. Together, we’ll look at how your metabolism may intersect with hormones, emotional health, medications and treatments from other professionals, and the demands of everyday life.

At SustainMD, I can give your metabolic health the time and attention it deserves. I’ll advocate for this part of your care, whether that means navigating medication coverage, helping you understand your options, monitoring how you respond to treatment, or working alongside the other professionals who care for you. My goal is to make sure the metabolic piece of your health is not overlooked, but thoughtfully supported as part of the bigger picture.

Care that evolves with you

I bring specialized knowledge and the tools of Obesity Medicine to your care: medications, labs and other data, and an understanding of the biology that influences metabolic health. But knowing the medicine is only part of good care.

Over time, I also get to know you: how your body responds, the patterns that help or hinder you, what you’ve been able to sustain, and where change tends to get stuck. That ongoing relationship helps me use the medical tools more thoughtfully and tailor your treatment to you.

Together, we keep learning what works, and your care evolves from there.

You’ll work directly with me. As we get to know each other, we’ll keep reviewing your care together and making changes around your needs.

A physician who takes the time to know you

Dr. Allison Pope Barbee

I want to understand what you’ve already been through, what has and hasn’t worked, and what you need from your care now. That starts with listening to your story, without judgment, blame, or shame.

We’ll look beyond the numbers to understand how your metabolism, emotional health, and the realities of everyday life fit together. Life is rarely predictable, and your care should make room for its interruptions and imperfections, not make you feel like you’ve failed when things don’t go according to plan.

I’ll bring my experience in Family Medicine and Obesity Medicine, while you bring the experience of living in your own body. Together, we’ll find what works, navigate the disruptions, and adjust as we go.

Your story matters here. We’ll take time to understand it and move forward together.

A short introduction from Dr. Barbee to virtual weight and metabolic care, available in North Carolina, California, Florida and Maine.

How Care Works at SustainMD

  1. We begin with your story. I review your medical history and previous treatment, along with your current medications and available lab results. If additional testing is appropriate, I explain what I recommend and why. This is the first of two extended visits, with time based on your needs.

  2. At our second extended visit, we review the findings and discuss what they mean for your care. Together, we develop an individual plan around your needs and the realities of your life. The $500 initial consultation fee covers both visits.

  3. If you choose to continue, Signature Care Membership is $200 per month and includes monthly physician visits and direct contact with me by text or email. We’ll keep reviewing your progress and adjusting your care as your needs change.

Being your doctor also means being your advocate. When insurance puts up barriers to treatment, I personally handle prior authorizations and appeals to fight for access to treatment that is appropriate for you, including GLP-1 medications. When insurance won’t cover your care, I look for practical ways to make treatment more affordable. I have arranged discounted lab pricing and stay current on self-pay medication options.

Before you book

Will I always see Dr. Barbee?

Yes. You’ll work directly with me for your physician visits at SustainMD and have a direct line of communication to me, not a phone tree or layers of staff.

What happens in the initial consultation?

Your initial consultation includes two extended visits with me for a total fee of $500. We begin with your story and medical history, review available information, and arrange additional testing when appropriate. At the second visit, we review the findings together and develop your individual care plan. Each visit’s length depends on your needs.

Will I be prescribed weight loss medication?

I’ll assess whether medication is appropriate for you, in addition to a personalized plan for nutrition and physical activity. We can discuss GLP-1 treatment and other FDA-approved medications as part of that conversation.

What does membership include and what does it cost?

Signature Care Membership costs $200 per month after the initial consultation. It includes monthly physician visits and direct contact with me by text or email. I review your care with you and personally handle prescription changes or manage side effects when needed.

How do payment and insurance work?

You pay SustainMD directly for my professional services. I do not bill insurance for consultations or membership, but I do help you use insurance when appropriate for other parts of your care. I personally handle prior authorizations and appeals for prescribed medication when needed. For eligible visits, including one-time appointments, I can provide an itemized invoice for you to submit to your insurer for possible out-of-network reimbursement. Your insurance plan determines whether they will assist with coverage for the medications, labs and monitoring you need. Memberships do not include medications or labs. • Medication costs are self-pay at the pharmacy using the most current discounts available or per individual insurance co-pays/deductibles. • Laboratory testing can be performed at Quest using SustainMD's discounts or you may choose to pay your insurance co-pay or deductible.

Where can I receive care?

I offer virtual care in North Carolina, California, Florida, and Maine. Virtual visits are available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. In-person visits are available on Tuesdays from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. at 851 Bradley St NE, Concord, NC 28025.
