Periodic Limb Movement Disorder – Virtual Support for Restful Sleep

Periodic Limb Movement Disorder (PLMD) is a sleep-related condition that causes repetitive, involuntary leg movements during the night. These movements often disrupt sleep without a person realizing it, leading to daytime fatigue, brain fog, and mood changes.

At SustainMD, we don’t replace neurologists or sleep specialists. Instead, we provide membership-based obesity medicine and primary care that support patients living with PLMD as part of their broader health. This includes considering how sleep quality, hormones, nutrition, medications, and metabolic health factors interact with your symptoms.

Through virtual care with Dr. Allison Pope Barbee, MD, you’ll receive compassionate, personalized support designed to integrate PLMD into your overall health plan — so you feel understood, supported, and cared for over time.

Understanding Periodic Limb Movement Disorder

PLMD is often confused with Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS), but the two conditions are distinct. Unlike RLS, which creates an urge to move the legs while awake, PLMD occurs involuntarily during sleep.

Many patients discover PLMD only after a sleep study or because a partner notices the repetitive movements. The result is often poor-quality sleep, leaving patients tired and unfocused during the day.

Recognizing Symptoms and Challenges

Feeling fatigued even after a full night’s sleep

Daytime sleepiness or brain fog

Mood swings or irritability

Bed partner noticing leg jerks or kicking at night

Difficulty staying asleep or frequent awakenings

Causes and Links to Metabolic Health

Factors That Can Influence PLMD

Low iron or ferritin levels

Chronic conditions such as diabetes, kidney disease, or neuropathy

Sleep disorders, including sleep apnea or insomnia

Hormonal or age-related changes in brain chemistry and sleep regulation

Because PLMD is connected to both sleep and metabolic health, addressing contributing factors like iron status, obesity, and medications is essential.
