Mind and Metabolism

Emotional wellbeing, attention, stress and sleep can affect how a metabolic treatment plan works in everyday life. They deserve consideration alongside your medical history and physical health.

Drawing on my Family Medicine background, I support neurodivergent patients and patients with mood disorders within their obesity and metabolic care. We can discuss attention and executive-function concerns, medication effects and the practical demands that shape your treatment.

How mood fits into metabolic care

If you already have depression, anxiety or other mental health concerns, I consider your current treatment and how you are feeling when discussing metabolic care. The aim is to understand what your plan needs to accommodate and what additional support may be helpful.

I may provide treatment within my Family Medicine scope when appropriate. This does not mean taking over all mental health prescribing or replacing your psychiatrist or therapist. I welcome collaboration with the clinicians already involved in your care.

How I support neurodivergent patients

Attention and executive-function concerns can make it difficult to organize appointments, establish routines or follow a complicated plan. We can discuss those barriers openly and use them to inform recommendations.

Support begins with understanding your existing diagnosis, previous treatment and current needs. Raising an attention concern does not automatically establish an ADHD diagnosis or a medication recommendation.

01

How medication effects are reviewed

Some medications can contribute to weight gain. I review current medicines and your response to them when considering possible contributors to your weight concerns.

If another clinician prescribes a medication, I coordinate any proposed change with that clinician. The benefits of existing treatment remain important; do not stop or change a prescription on your own.

Medication for obesity may also be considered when appropriate, within a plan that takes your wider medical and mental health treatment into account.

02

How care works alongside your existing support

Your therapist, psychiatrist, primary care clinician and other specialists remain important partners in your health. My role is to give your metabolic care focused attention while considering that broader treatment.

If an eating concern suggests a need for dedicated assessment or specialist support, we discuss the appropriate next step. Metabolic care is not a substitute for treatment of an eating disorder.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I discuss depression or anxiety during metabolic care?

Yes. Your emotional wellbeing and current treatment are relevant to the assessment. I consider them while working within my scope and alongside your other clinicians.

Does Dr. Barbee support patients with ADHD?

Yes. I support neurodivergent patients and consider attention and executive-function concerns when developing a metabolic care plan.

Does this include a new ADHD diagnosis or prescription?

Not automatically. An attention concern needs appropriate assessment. Any diagnostic or prescribing decision depends on your individual needs and the scope of care.

Will you become my mental health prescriber?

Not automatically. I may treat concerns within my Family Medicine scope, but I do not take over all psychiatric care. We clarify clinical responsibilities and coordinate with your existing clinicians.

Can I keep seeing my therapist?

Yes. I welcome patients who already work with a therapist and consider that support as part of their broader care.

Is sleep part of this service?

Yes. Sleep is considered alongside stress, hormonal changes and metabolic health. Further treatment or specialist referral depends on your assessment.

Can my medication be contributing to weight gain?

Some medicines can contribute. Discuss the concern with your prescribing clinician. I can review it as part of your metabolic assessment and coordinate any proposed changes.

Can I discuss restricting food or forgetting meals?

Yes. These concerns deserve a supportive clinical discussion. Further evaluation or dedicated eating-disorder support may be needed depending on your situation.

Do I need to have a routine established before booking?

No. Understanding your current routines and barriers helps inform a plan you can use. You do not need to resolve them before seeking care.

Is this a replacement for specialist mental health care?

No. SustainMD provides metabolic care alongside appropriate mental health treatment. Your existing specialists continue care outside this practice's scope.
